CHAPTER XX

When next Cori awoke, it was her youngest son Rion who’d stumbled from his room to get in her bed, and just when she’d succeeded in getting him back to sleep, in walked TJ.

“Mama, I scared. Can I sleep with you?”

“Sure baby, climb in,” she said moving over, allowing space for him.

“Mama?” he asked.

“Yes TJ?”

“Is Will comin’ back?”

Cori wasn’t sure what had prompted him to ask that question, but it was the second time and she attributed it to the fact that his father had abandoned them and he probably felt insecure.

“Yes, baby. He’s only been gone a short while, and sometimes it takes time to get from one place to the next.”

TJ had no concept of distance; however, he knew that Will had been gone much too long.

“I know, but Daddy left, and he never came back to see me and Rion. Do you miss him, Mama?”

“Who, your father?” she asked, confused.

“No, Will.”

“Yes, and he’s probably missing us something awful, too, but don’t worry, sweetie, because I know that he’ll be here with us soon. Now go to sleep and before you know it’ll be so.” Cori didn’t doubt that Will missed them, but was beginning to worry about how she was going to take care of her boys if he didn’t come back. She didn’t know when he was due to arrive because he hadn’t called, but prayed that he was on the way. Her worries were unfounded. Though she was unaware of it, Will was only a short distance away.

When he walked inside the house, he found it much the way he’d left it, neat with the smell of sweetness in the air. As he walked up the hall, he noticed that the boys’ bedroom door was open, and he peeked in on his way to Cori’s room. Stopping at the door, standing right where he was, he witnessed a sight that was so perfect, surely a work of art. Quietly putting down his bags, he pulled his pad from the portfolio that he always carried, and began to sketch the heavenly scene that was before him. It was more beautiful than anything he’d ever witnessed and would be too priceless to sell. How beautiful Cori looked to him, with her two boys nestled close to her, Rion lying in her arms and TJ at his back. This he proclaimed, would be his greatest work yet and he’d call this one “The Adoring Mother.” Careful not to wake them, he crept into the room, kicked off his shoes and climbed in behind Cori, pulling her into his arms. The familiar feel of Will’s body awakened her, and snuggled closer before she turned over to welcome him home properly.

“You came back,” she said, incredulously.

“As promised. Did you doubt me?”

“Honestly, yes,” she said, confessing.

Kissing her deeply, he conveyed his sincerity putting all her doubts to rest. “I love you Cori, and I couldn’t take another day being away from you. In the future, never doubt my word, as I try to honor it.
